When you imagine postcard-perfect beaches, what comes to mind? Pristine white sands, azure waters, and gently swaying palms, right? While those classic images are undeniably dreamy, if you’re seeking something more authentic, uniquely African, and equally enchanting, look no further than Mozambique! Two of our esteemed Travel Experts, Samantha Myburgh and Peggy Bzinkiewicz, recently returned from an extended visit to this off-the-beaten-path destination. I had the pleasure of interviewing Samantha, who volunteered to share what’s new and exciting in Mozambique.

Why Mozambique?

At Rhino Africa, we’re passionate about the “safari and beach” holiday combination. I mean, what could be better than traversing Bigterritory in the Greater Kruger before unwinding in a stunning seaside locale? According to Sam, Mozambique is the ideal beach counterpart to your Southern Africa safari adventure.

“Mozambique is the ideal beach destination for a combined bush and beach itinerary. Just as Zanzibar complements East Africa, Mozambique perfectly suits Southern Africa, aligning with the prime safari season.” – Samantha.

Why Mozambique Instead of, Let’s Say, Seychelles?

While many travellers opt for Zanzibar or the glitzy shores of Mauritius and Seychelles, Mozambique remains less on the radar and more of a hidden gem. Samantha, who has explored Africa’s coastlines and islands extensively, believes the country has a unique charm all to its own.

“Mozambique is the quintessential ‘African’ beach destination. I’ve been to Seychelles, Mauritius, and beyond, but Mozambique stands out as more authentically African in every way.” – Samantha.

What Makes Mozambique “Authentically African”?

For those familiar with Africa, you’ll understand the concept of “authentically African.” For those who aren’t, our expert Samantha explains:

“In Mozambique, you’ll meet locals, possibly visit villages, see informal settlements, witness local fishermen and experience the vibrant culture firsthand. You’ll also have the chance to savour cuisine with a traditional African twist.” – Samantha.

And, speaking of cuisine, Mozambique’s economy thrives on fisheries, so get ready for a smorgasbord of seafood!

“Throughout my trip, I was spoiled for choice when it came to seafood. It’s the main food source in Mozambique. If seafood isn’t your thing, there are other options, but you’d be missing out. From prawns and line fish to lobster and shrimp omelettes – the seafood selection is spectacular.” – Samantha.

Don’t Forget its Tidal Allure!

Another notable feature of Mozambique is its pronounced tidal movements, especially along the mainland, compared to the Indian Ocean Islands.

“The tidal aspect is a delightful surprise! It reveals a landscape perfect for photography and fascinating beach walks. So, instead of just strolling beside the water, you venture INTO the beach itself, discovering a kaleidoscope of shells and ocean creatures. It’s like a hidden world you never knew existed.” Samantha.

Where Did You Go in Mozambique?

Samantha experienced a myriad of Mozambique’s most reputable seaside properties, both on the mainland, in and around Vilanculos, and in the Bazaruto Archipelago.

“It was incredibly beneficial to see all the properties in one trip. That was the most enriching aspect. I literally saw EVERYTHING, which is rare for an excursion like this. It allowed me to compare each place in its current state with a fresh perspective, assessing which of our guests would best suit each property.” – Samantha.

Exploring Vilanculos and Beyond

With a small but international airport offering daily flights from South Africa, it was only natural for Sam to start her Mozambican adventure in the picturesque coastal town of Vilanculos.

Then there’s Santorini Mozambique, if villas fit for Zeus himself are your fancy. And if you prefer a lodge with African-inspired décor set in lush gardens that spill out onto golden sands, AsDunas is calling your name.

A Pleasant Surprise at Sussurro

Continuing her journey on the mainland, north of Vilanculos, Sam arrived at Sussurro. This stunning boutique hotel opened in 2022 and is a relatively new addition to Mozambique’s luxury offerings.

“Spectacular, spectacular, spectacular! Sussurro’s style is a blend of boho-zen, minimalism, and deluxe. Top to bottom, everything features natural tones and diverse textures – varied fabrics, stone, wood, and marble. Even the thatch on the roof was done in an extraordinarily beautiful and novel way.” – Samantha.

The sense of exclusivity at Sussurro is heightened by its six expansive suites, referred to as “bungalows.” Each offers over a thousand square feet of personal space surrounded by nature.

“Sussurro’s rooms are HUGE! And the breeze – let me tell you, it might sound ridiculous – but the shutters on each side of my bungalow created a beautiful cross breeze. The ever-present ocean air was a refreshing reminder that I was at the beach, which is something you don’t get when you’re confined to a room with air conditioning.” – Samantha.

“Sussurro is perfect for honeymooners and couples seeking remoteness and relaxation. And, while there are activities included, like dhow cruises and beach picnics, Sussurro is especially fitting for those who want to simply be together, savouring good food and exceptional service in a sublime setting.” – Samantha.
